Our Story

Hey there, thanks for checking out our post. We are Mouhssin and Yassin Kharbouch, Surf Twins Essaouira!

We are passionate about surfing and have both been surfing since we were children. We have over twenty two years of experience between us! Born and raised in Essaouira we know all the surf spots and have been working as surf coaches for several years. We have our own surf school in the heart of Morocco.

The story of how we began surfing is an interesting one. When we were young, we would go to the beach in Essaouira everyday to play football with our friends. One day we spotted some tourists surfing in the ocean and became very curious about this sport. We wanted to try it out badly but spoke no English or French at the time.  We used our body language with some big smiles to ask surfers if we could try out their boards. Eventually somebody agreed and as soon as we entered the water, we were addicted.

Shortly after, we started volunteering at a surf school to get some experience and worked multiple surf jobs up until a year and a half ago. We decided to follow our dream and set up our own surf school on the lovely beach of Sidi Kaouki, Morocco!

We offer surf lessons and trips in Essaouira to suit your needs. Whether you’re a beginner or looking for some extra tips, you will improve your surfing while having a great time. Morocco is a country full of history. There are many historic cities with old fort walls still in place. Essaouira was once the capital of Morocco. Portuguese, Spanish and French all came by boat to the port of Essaouira to exchange products with Moroccans. The current capital of Morocco is Rabat.

The official languages of Morocco are Berber and Arabic. French, Spanish and English are also spoken in the country.

Markets have a big presence in Morocco and are one of the country’s greatest attractions. We highly recommend taking a trip to a market to get a real taste of the culture. You can find a Moroccan market in the medina of any city you are staying in!

Moroccan cuisine

Moroccan cuisine is some of the best in the world. The blend of spices with fresh meat and vegetables creates some delightful local dishes, the most well known being couscous and tagine.

Known as the national dish of Morocco, couscous is made from tiny steamed balls of semolina. It’s often cooked with spices, vegetables and dried fruit. Vegetarians will love this dish!

Tagine is a slow-cooked dish named after the handmade pot it is cooked in. Similar to a stew, it is usually made with meat plus a variety of spices, vegetables, nuts and dried fruits. You can also get this dish without meat for vegetarians!
